The Digital Single Market in Europe Print
Tuesday, 05 May 2015, 09:30 - 14:00

The digital single market in Europe: implications for the creation and diffusion of audiovisual and cinematographic content.

This workshop is  organized by the Jean-Jacques Laffont Chair at the Toulouse School of Economics (TSE) and the Institute for Advanced Study in Toulouse (IAST), and the Université libre de Bruxelles (ULB).

The aim of the workshop is twofold:

a) to encourage a discussion and a convergence of minds on the analysis of the consequences of the digital single market and on the way in which it should be organized;

b) to help the research community engage with the policy making community to encourage more relevant research on the topics which will be discussed.

The discussion will be organized around three round tables of one hour each with the following themes:
1. Policy developments, and in particular a) the development of the single market up to the present;  b) current proposals for moving forward; c) the debates about the directions that the single market should take.
2. How should we analyze the single market? How do we trade off the different objectives: preservation of national cultures, development of a European identity, economic efficiency, access to information and entertainment for European citizens? What is special about audiovisual content creation and diffusion relative to other kinds of goods and services?
3. Next steps. What do we still need to know, or to understand better, in order to be able to formulate effective policy? Which aspects of content creation and diffusion are still poorly understood? Where can future research most make a difference? Where is evidence-based input most needed in the public debate?
