2nd Workshop of the Burundi Research Network

Researchers from different disciplines in the social sciences will gather in Brussels to present and discuss their research at ULB. Topics include the economics of conflict and peace, human rights and media, poverty, households and education. The Key Note speech will be delivered by dr.Gervais Rufyikiri, former 2ed Vice-President in the government of Burundi and former President of the Senat, and economist by training. His speech will be commented by Thierry Vircoulon, Senior Central Africa Consultant at the International Crisis Group. Main organisers are prof. Philip Verwimp from ECARES and prof. Marie-Soleil Frère from Communication Studies, currently Vice-Rector of International Relations and Development Cooperation. The workshop will be concluded with a policy forum on the activities of NGO’s in Burundi, and will discuss the (un)usefulness of development cooperation in a period a political instability and insecurity. Avocats Sans Frontières, RCN Justice et Démocratie, Radio Benevolencia and Search for Common Ground have confirmed their participation.

The organising committee for this workshop is composed of Jean-Benoit Falisse (University of Edinburgh), Marie-Soleil Frere (ULB), Dominik Kohlhagen (independent scholar), Tomas van Acker (University of Gent), Gérard Birantamije (Université du Lac Tanganika) and Philip Verwimp (ULB).
