An Economic Theory of Political Polarization and Public Opinions

Abstract : In this paper I investigate the interaction between political parties and public opinion. I develop a two-periods model of political competition in which parties take into account public opinion when deciding their positions with respect to a political issue. The policies supported by parties in the first period affect public opinion of the second period, such that the relationship is interactive. I identify an effect that increases the probability of political polarization. I show that the parties strategically use their influence on public opinion, and this potential influence makes them more likely to be polarized. This gives a novel explanation for the increasing polarization of the US political class. It also helps to understand the features behind the rise of political conflicts within a society.
