Circular Statistics in R

Abstract: Computing advances have led to fundamental changes in terms of what applied and research statisticians can do and how they do it. The R Project in particular has made a huge contribution to that quantum shift. In recent years Ulric Lund (California Polytechnic State University) and Claudio Agostinelli (Ca Foscari University, Venice) have developed the “circular” package with functions designed to perform many aspects of classical circular statistical analysis. In my talk I will provide an introduction to the statistical analysis of circular data, the functionality of the circular package, and some of the more flexible models that have recently been proposed in the literature. I will also illustrate, with the aid of R and the circular package, how likelihood-based inference can be performed for two of those models applied in the analysis of palaeocurrent cross-bed azimuths and changes in the direction of movement of a fruit fly larva. More extensive details are due to appear next year in the book entitled “Circular Statistics in R” published by Oxford University Press.
