Apply

If you are interested in applying for the ECARES doctoral school (see here for the program and different tracks), please do so by using the application procedure below.

Applications are considered on a rolling basis and decisions are usually taken within a couple of weeks of reception of the full file (including the letters of recommendation). The deadline for application is always on September 30 (for EU Citizens) and March 31 (for non EU citizens).

The admission into the PhD-program proceeds in two steps:

Step 1

Prospective students have to send the following documents by email to Anne-Marie Notarianni.

  • The application form.
  • The curriculum vitae.
  • Transcripts of records of all the previous university studies.
  • A motivation letter.
  • Three recommendation letters.
  • Master’s thesis (when available).
  • Depending on the prior education, Toelf, GRE, and related international tests might be required. They can be attached to the application if desired.

Be aware that, sometimes a hard copy of above documents might be requested by postal services.

If admitted, the prospective students receive a preliminary admission letter from ECARES.  Later they have to officially register at the University.  The ECARES preliminary admission letter clearly explains the steps to follow.  If things remain unclear, our staff will help you. Please note that red tape for non EU students may be complex, mainly due to visa requirements. We strongly suggest submitting your visa application to the Belgian consulate as soon as possible.

Notice that acceptance to the ECARES doctoral school is conditional on the payment of the tuition fee.

Step 2

After the Research master (part of the Doctoral training), the Doctoral School decides about the admission to the thesis writing phase. In order to be admitted to the ECARES doctoral School, a student must have finished her/his course work with an average grade of at least 14 (which roughly compares to a grade of B+ in the American system), and a minimum grade of 12 in each individual course.  Furthermore, one of the ECARES fellows must be willing to supervise the student.
